Reading the charts at six-foot-four
At 6'4" the Santa Cruz 5010 chart lists the rider in two sizes, because one size's span ends where the next begins. The brands leave that choice to the rider: the smaller frame is easier to move around, the larger one more stable at speed. Norco Range and Specialized Crossroads do not print a size for this height: the largest frame stops shorter.
Across the four mountain-bike charts the answer is XL or XXL: Specialized Fuse XL, Specialized Chisel XL, Santa Cruz 5010 XL/XXL, Norco Range none. Letter sizes are each brand's own, so a Norco medium and a Santa Cruz medium are not the same frame.
Checking the fit beyond height
Height charts assume average proportions. Cannondale's method uses inseam instead: "Measure your inseam with your legs 8-10 inches apart and subtract 1-2 inches for crotch clearance." Then compare that stand-over figure with the model's geometry chart and keep 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm) of clearance over the top tube. A rider with long legs for 6'4" may suit the larger of two sizes; a long torso and short legs, the smaller with a longer stem.
Either side of six-foot-four
A six-foot-two rider reads XL on the mountain charts. A six-foot-six rider reads XXL.
For a six-foot-four rider these are the brands' published height spans, a starting point for a test ride, not a bike fit. Trek is not listed: its size charts could not be read from Trek. See the methodology.
