Specifications from each model's page (links in the table), read 2026-10-20. The share column is a one hundred eighty-pound paddler's weight as a share of each rated maximum, with no gear; a eighty-two-kilogram paddler in metric terms.

What the numbers say at one hundred eighty pounds

The tightest fit that still passes every rule is the Pelican Maxim 100X, rated 275 lb, which puts a one hundred eighty-pound paddler at 65% of its maximum. Kayaks that pass run from 9 ft 5.04 in up to 12 ft 6 in, so capacity, not length, is the deciding number at this weight.

One of the listed kayaks is rated below 180 lb outright (Heron Junior), so they are out before any gear is counted. Compared with a paddler twenty pounds lighter, Breeze drops out of the passing list.

Old Town is the only maker here that prints two figures: a total capacity and a lower usable capacity. Across its solo models the usable figure averages 84% of the total, close to the 70% Brooklyn Kayak Company works from, so those two rules mostly agree. Kokopelli's rule counts body weight only, which is why it is the most forgiving once gear goes in.

Adding gear

With 25 lb of gear a one hundred eighty-pound paddler's load is 205 lb and the 70% rule asks for 293 lb of rated capacity; 14 solo kayaks still pass, starting with the Heron 9XT. With 50 lb it becomes 329 lb. Old Town's guide puts it plainly: "Always check the maximum capacity to ensure it accommodates your weight and any gear you're bringing along."

Either side of one hundred eighty pounds

A one hundred sixty-pound paddler needs 229 lb of rated capacity alone. A two hundred-pound paddler needs 286 lb.

For a one hundred eighty-pound paddler these are published capacity figures and rules of thumb, not a stability test. Never load a kayak past its rated maximum, and wear a buoyancy aid.
