How Ski Length Changes With Ability: Three Charts Compared

Ski length moves with ability by more than most people expect: on evo's chart a beginner's ski is 10 cm shorter than an intermediate's and 18 cm shorter than an expert's at the same height. All three brand charts read here start from height, then shift for ability; they disagree on how far.

What each chart does with ability

Worked example: 5 ft 10 in (178 cm)

Ability evo K2 Faction All charts
Beginner 165 cm 158–178 cm 165–185 cm 158–185 cm
Intermediate 175 cm 168–184 cm 165–185 cm 165–185 cm
Advanced 183 cm 172–193 cm 165–185 cm 165–193 cm

K2 has no 5 ft 10 in row, so its 5'8" and 6'0" rows are both read. The spread between a beginner and an advanced reading on the same chart is 35 cm on K2's, from 158 to 193 cm.

Two more heights

At 5 ft 4 in (163 cm), the intermediate span across the charts is 150–170 cm and the advanced span 150–173 cm. At 6 ft 2 in (188 cm), the intermediate span is 175–195 cm and evo's expert column prints "190+", the point where its chart stops giving a number.

Adjustments on top of ability

K2 publishes the clearest adjustments: powder or freeride adds 2 to 5 cm, park or groomers takes 2 to 5 cm off, and a lighter or heavier skier moves 1 to 3 cm. evo's version in words: "Longer if you ski fast and aggressively, weigh more than average for your height, ski mostly off-trail, or are buying a ski with significant tip rocker."

Questions

How long should beginner skis be?

Shorter than the skier: evo prints a beginner length well under height, K2 says chin height or shorter, and Faction says to read the lower end of its range. The worked example above gives the figures for one height.

Should expert skis be taller than me?

Often, yes. K2 puts advanced skiers near or above head height, evo's expert column runs a little over the skier's height, and Faction's top end goes beyond it for fast, aggressive or off-piste skiing.
